Sir JACOB EPSTEIN  [1880-1959]

'Sir Muirhead Bone', 1916
bronze, edition of 4, 26 cm high [excluding the original wood base]

Muirhead Bone was appointed as the first official war artist in 1916 and Epstein modelled this head shortly afterwards. He was one of the prime movers behind the opening of the Imperial War Museum [IWM] in 1917 and was a trustee of the IWM, the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery. This cast is believed to be the only one in private hands - even the IWM do not have one!

One of Epstein's best early heads produced during the First World War. All 4 known casts are recorded in Silber and are believed to have been cast between 1916 and 1918.

'The Sculpture of Epstein', Evelyn Silber, Phaidon, 1986, p.140, no.75 [no.4] - also illustrated in these other books on Epstein: Van Dieren 1920, pl.XL11; Haskell 1931, p.172; Black 1942, pl.72; Buckle 1963, pl.126.
