Fred [Fritz] Kormis [1897-1986] was born in Germany and started training as a sculptor at the age of 13. He fought for Austria in WW1 and was captured by the Russians in 1915. He was imprisoned in Siberia from 1915 until he escaped in 1921, returning Germany to restart his sculpture career. He left Germany to escape Hitler, eventually ending up in England where he remained for the rest of his life.

He produced some exceptional sclptures, particularly his prisoner of war monuments, which are some of the best known.
