John Tunnard [1900-71] studied at the Royal College of Art and was initially influenced by surrealism. He lived in Cornwall, but was never really linked to the St.Ives group of artists. His first one-man exhibition was at the Redfern Gallery [London] in 1934, where he showed many times. He had several exhibitions in the USA, including the Guggenheim and Durlacher Gallery. A major retrospective show of John Tunnard was held at the Royal Academy in 1977 and a book on the life and work of John Tunnard was published by Scolar Press in 1997. Many public collections have examples of his work, including the Museum of Modern Art [New York], the Guggenheim [New York] and the Tate Gallery [London].
