Ceri Richards [1903-71] is one of the UK's greatest modern artists, 2nd only to Francis Bacon in my opinion. He studied at the Royal College of Art, 1924-7, where he later taught. He produced wonderful abstract constructions during the 1930s, which are among the best ever produced. Although a lot of his later work was more figurative and of exceptional quality, he was at his best when closest to abstraction. His most impressive series of paintings are the 'Cathedrale Englouties' produced during the 1960s [he painted over 100 of these]. He represented the UK at the Venice Biennale in 1962 and won a major prize for painting. At that time he showed at Marlborough Fine Art alongside Francis Bacon. where he shared equal ranking. The many public galleries holding his work include the Tate Gallery, who have a massive collection, where a major retrospective exhibition was held in 1981. An excellent book on the work of Ceri Richards by Mel Gooding was published in 2002. |
