John Piper [1903-92] is one of the UK's best known painters. He studied at the Royal College of Art from 1926-9 and concentrated on abstract painting during the 1930s, before moving to his more familiar figurative style. He produced a series of abstract paintings during the early 60s which were studies for large murals in the Electricity Board building near Wandsworth Bridge.
A major retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Tate Gallery in 1983. The Tate Gallery are one of many public galleries holding work by John Piper.
Several books have been published on the work of John Piper.
